Creating a culture of accountability

Managers try to instill accountability through such means as reward systems and setting deadlines. While helpful, these external factors do not guarantee shared responsibility and ownership. True accountability is internally motivated and can be effectively facilitated in teams where mutual accountability is based on interdependency. Redefining accountability and following up with supportive measures can create the culture needed to succeed.
